Lawn Care, Cleaning & Pest Control: The Bookkeeping Truth Behind Recurring Revenue
Recurring revenue businesses look great on paper. The problem starts when you actually try to manage one.
If you run a lawn care, cleaning, or pest control company, your business is essentially a portfolio of routes — and every route, every customer, every service line has its own economics. The total revenue number on your P&L tells you almost nothing about whether the business is healthy, growing the right kind of customer, or quietly bleeding margin.
The bookkeeping issues that hurt most operators in these industries:
- Route-level profitability is invisible. Revenue per route is easy. Cost per route — labor, materials, fuel, drive time, equipment — is hard. Most operators can't tell you which routes are profitable and which are subsidizing the rest.
- Seasonal cash flow gets mismanaged. Lawn care peaks April through October. Pest control has its own seasonality. If your books don't separate seasonal revenue from recurring, you'll over-hire in the boom and panic in the off-season.
- Customer concentration creeps up unnoticed. Commercial accounts often account for far more revenue (and risk) than residential. Without proper segmentation in the books, you don't see it until you lose one.
- Sales tax on services varies by state. Many service categories are taxable in some states and exempt in others. Operators expanding into new territories routinely under-collect for years before getting hit with assessments.
- Equipment depreciation isn't tracked properly. Trucks, mowers, sprayers — these are real assets with real economic lives. If they're being expensed instead of capitalized, your margins look worse than they are. If they're not being maintained on a schedule, your margins are about to look worse than they look.
The cost of getting this wrong: pricing too low because you don't actually know your costs, scaling unprofitable customer segments, getting blindsided by tax bills, and arriving at a sale with financials that won't survive diligence.
The fix isn't complicated, but it has to be done deliberately. That's the work we do at Business Insight Services — building bookkeeping that actually reflects how your business runs.
