E-Commerce & Retail: The Inventory Black Hole

Ben Schwartz May 10, 2026

Every dollar tied up in inventory is a dollar not earning anything else. And most e-commerce and retail operators don't actually know what their inventory is worth, what their true COGS is by SKU, or how much sales tax exposure they've accumulated across states.

That's not a small problem. It's a valuation problem, a cash flow problem, and a regulatory problem rolled into one.

The bookkeeping issues that hurt e-commerce and retail operators:

  • Multi-channel sales aren't reconciled. Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Walmart, retail point of sale — each channel has its own fees, settlement timing, and reporting quirks. If they're not reconciled to a single source of truth, your revenue, margin, and cash positions are all approximate.
  • Sales tax nexus is a ticking exposure. Selling into a state can trigger collection requirements based on revenue thresholds, transaction counts, or both — and the rules change. Operators who haven't audited their nexus footprint usually have multi-state exposure they don't know about.
  • COGS by SKU is unmeasured. You can't optimize what you don't measure. Without SKU-level cost tracking, you don't know which products are actually profitable, and you can't make rational decisions about pricing, advertising spend, or product mix.
  • Marketplace fees aren't isolated. Amazon FBA fees, payment processing, returns processing, advertising fees — these can eat 15-30% of revenue. If they're aggregated in a single line, you can't manage them.
  • Returns and chargebacks distort margins. A 20% return rate isn't a 20% problem — it's a much bigger one once you factor in restocking, damage, and shipping. Many operators don't track returns as a separate cost category.

What it costs: multi-state tax assessments, unprofitable SKUs scaling because nobody noticed, working capital trapped in slow-moving inventory, and a sale process where buyers can't validate your numbers.

We help e-commerce and retail operators build the bookkeeping infrastructure that actually scales.
